Toronto Life
In an unassuming (albeit Yorkville) way, this 30-year veteran has succeeded where so many others have tried and failed. Local and seasonal is not the mantra here—Il Posto is old-school—but trendiness matters little when the apps arrive, especially the plate of gorgeous, nutty, perfectly cured prosciutto and sublimely creamy buffalo mozzarella. Vitello tonnato, a chilled appetizer of thinly sliced cooked veal slathered with an umami-rich purée of tuna, capers and olive oil, is a knockout dish, especially with a squeeze of its lemon garnish. Simple pastas are well executed, as in a generous bowl of al dente spaghetti that’s tossed with just enough creamy wine-and-tomato sauce and topped with a towering pile of seafood (from big, juicy shrimp to mussels, clams, tuna and, sadly, overcooked calamari). One big, beautiful frenched veal chop overwhelms a tiny nest of accompanying veg, but the meat is tender and judiciously sauced. And while many would sneer at tiramisú, here it’s wonderfully restrained with a core of deeply bitter espresso-dipped ladyfingers covered in creamy, sweet mascarpone. Personable, lively servers are knowledgeable and opinionated in the best way.
